DIY: Runway-Insipred Raffia Earrings

When creating their Sicily-inspired S/S 13 collection, no detail was too small for designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. You could see the Italian island’s rich and vibrant culture in everything from street theater puppet prints to brightly hued crochet wedges. Even the collection’s crowd-pleasing jewelry, most notably the Clip On Pom Pom Raffia Earrings ($565), nodded to the brand’s Mediterranean theme. While we're not in the print-making business and haven't crocheted any shoes lately, we had a hunch we could create our own version of the mixed-media earrings--with a little help from D.I.Y. expert Erica Domesek of P.S. FIRST LOOK: Target Collaborating With Phillip Lim For Fall! Target just announced their latest collaboration… with designer Phillip Lim! And while some of their more recent collabs have received a lukewarm response from customers and editors alike, Lim’s legitimacy within the fashion world has everyone riled up. As Racked pointed out this morning, the line ”revives collab excitement,” after a downward trend in the public’s interest in high-low collections. According Target’s blog, 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target will include 100+ pieces ranging from bags to shoes to travel accessories and men’s and women’s apparel. The limited edition collection will hit Target stores and online September 15th, and is priced $19.99-$299.99 – “with most items under $49.99.” Oh happy day! First there was the Celine trapeze rip-off and who could forget all of these. But even still, we’re still pretty shocked when we find that the retailer literally carbon copies something iconic. Although there have been countless iconic jumpsuit moments throughout fashion history--from David Bowie in Ziggy Stardust-era spandex to Britney Spears in red latex circa "Oops!... I Did It Again"--my favorite has to be Rosie The Riveter. The 1940s cultural icon was a symbol of female empowerment in her utilitarian denim jumpsuit and polka dot head scarf. Many years later, the jumpsuit--whether in full-length form or in an abbreviated romper style--still seems to be the calling card of a gutsy lady.
