It really is the most wonderful time of the year and while Thanksgiving has already passed, we still have at least another month of being tempted by great tasting food. If you want to try to avoid one of the typical New Year’s Resolutions that involves weight, use the following tips to get you through the rest of the holiday season and the winter months with minimal to no weight gain!
Find Balance: Of course you are going to indulge in some of your favorite holiday foods, but remember to always start off with small portions. You can always go back for seconds if you are still hungry. In addition to all the great tasting not so healthy choices you make, make sure you are picking healthy choices too. So, don’t forget your fresh fruit and vegetables, but make sure you avoid drowning your vegetables in large amounts of butter and/or seasoning. Remember to drink your water. 6-8 (8 oz.) glasses of water is the recommended amount.
Avoid too many spirits: I understand that “Tis the season to be Jolly”, especially when you are with your family and friends. I enjoy my cocktails as much as the next person, but I make sure I watch my liquid caloric intake. An eight oz glass of egg nog has 490 calories and a typical mixed drink can have between 300-400 calories (sometimes more) depending on how large the serving is.
Don’t forget to move it: I know that it is cold in some states and a morning or evening walk may not be possible for some of you, but remember that you can do exercises at home. A few at home exercises include: crunches, push-ups, leg lifts, squats, jogging in place, step exercises (if you have steps in your home) and my favorite dancing!
And finally, when I’m tempted to overindulge with any food or drinks I like to remember this saying my Aunt Jackie uses “Nothing tastes as good as being FINE feels!”
What are some of your suggestions to keep those unwanted winter pounds away? We would love to hear your advice!
