I was inspired by this tweet from Miss Tee:
“@iTANtalizeU If u want to exfoliate your lips, Mary Kay sales a lip exfoliant, but the lady at Ulta told me u that brown sugar & olive oil works too!“
so here are some exfoliates to keep your skin feeling soft & looking good even in those cold winter months!
***REMEMBER***: When using exfoliates take into consideration your skin type and allergens. I have tried all the recipes listed but what works for some does not work for all.
I’m a Lipstick Lover so of course I had to start with the LIPS! *Muah!*
Here’s that Brown Sugar Scrub recipe for your lips to keep your kisser pucker perfect!
Combine 1 tsp. of olive oil with 1 tsp. of white granulated sugar or brown sugar, and combine well until the mixture has the texture of coarse sand. Apply the mixture to your lips, gently rubbing the sugar to remove any flakes of skin. If you’d prefer, you can use a toothbrush to massage in the lip scrub. Rinse with warm water and apply a lip moisturizer immediately to keep your lips from drying out.

*I love Bath & Body Works’ C.O. Bigelow lip care line. They provide glosses, tints and balm infused with mint, lemon or cinnamon in them! My current favorite is their Magenta Mint Mentha Lip Tint. They come in various scents and tints so you’re bound to find something you like, plus the tingly feeling they give can really heat up a winter lip lock! 😉
Your FACE is the first thing people people see so why not keep it supple year round?
Try this Corn Flour Based Scrub
When used as a base to make facial masks, corn flour is an excellent ingredient if you’re dealing with oily skin. Corn flour picks up oil from the skin and traps it, leaving the skin moisturized but with diminished oiliness and shine free.
This mask is extremely easy to make.
Ingredients:
2 teaspoons of corn flour
1 egg white
1 egg white
Mix this two and apply on the face. Wash off after 15 minutes or until dry. While washing, use circular motion so that you can exfoliate the skin and help the circulation of its deeper layers. First apply warm and then cold water.
Or this Honey Based Scrub
Ingredients:
1 teaspoon of honey
2 teaspoons of finely ground almonds (not salted ones, just regular)
1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice
2 teaspoons of finely ground almonds (not salted ones, just regular)
1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice
Gently rub the face, don’t press too hard, you’ll scratch yourself 🙂
*You can also try ready made scrubs. Right now I’m loving Clear and Clear Deep Action Exfoliating Scrub! The scrubbers are a lil too harsh for me to use twice a day but they get all the dirt and leftover makeup off and it leaves my face is smooth and refreshingly cool.
Jus because your HANDS will be in gloves or pockets when you’re outside, you’re not gonna be outside forever!!! lol! Nobody, especially you, wants to see them cracked and dry when you go inside!
For a quick spa-like exfoliate try this Sugar Baby Scrub
Mix together 2 tablespoons of oil (mineral, baby, safflower, vegetable or olive) with 3 tablespoons of sugar the coarser the better but really any sugar type works. Make into a paste and rub gently into hands. Rinse well with warm water, pat dry.
To soften dry hands try one tablespoon of lemon juice mixed with a teaspoon of sugar and a little water smoothes dry or coarse hands. Rinse hands after a minute.
*I ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to be ashy!! (yes, lighter skinned black people DO get ashy!) My favorite lotion of all time has got to be St. Ives Naturally Soothing Oatmeal and Shea Butter Lotion. I apply it once a day, head to toe and even during the winter there’s not a chapped piece of skin in (or out) of sight! I started using it last year and now I can’t live without it!
I LOVE this!! Thanks for the additional information about exfoliating. It is extremely helpful!
