Weight Loss Failures and Success: Part III

There are a host of diet pill name brands that fill the shelves at Wal-Mart and all of your local drugstores. Some appetite suppressants can be prescribed by your physician (and if you are seriously interested in taking an appetite suppressant I suggest you see your doctor). However, there are millions of people who have relied on non-prescription diet supplements in an effort to lose weight. On my many weight loss journeys, I too have taken non-prescription diet pills. The pills that I took are called Hydroxycut and are still available in stores today.

Considering the fact that any type of drug can have severe effects on the body I knew it was important for me to take extreme caution while taking the pills. I took diet pills when I was trying to lose 15 pounds. I had tried everything and I could not lose those last pesky pounds. Hydroxycut had me taking too many pills a day and I noticed I started to have an elevated heart rate. I decided that my health was way more important and I stopped taking the pills about two weeks after I started. While taking the pills, I did lose 10 of the 15 pounds, but I was scared that I was putting my health in jeopardy. Of course, like the other quick weight loss methods it was only a temporary solution to the problem and I eventually gained the weight back. I wouldn’t recommend taking any diet pills because the side effects are too scary and your health is definitely NOT worth the risk.
This is the last week of the “what didn’t work for me” experiences. I am sure you are anxious to know about my current regimen and the things that I am doing to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle! Stay Tuned 🙂

Weight Loss Failures and Success: Part II

Weight Watchers may be the right fit for you!

So we can all agree that Jennifer Hudson looks amazing since she lost over 80 lbs. and has gone from a size 16 to a size 6.

Weight Watchers was instrumental in J.Hud losing all of that weight. Now, like I have told you all before I have tried a lot of methods, lots of fat burners and yes, I have tried Weight Watcher’s too! I went to the meetings, I bought the books they sold, I counted my points, I weighed in, and I did everything my group leader and the Weight Watcher’s staff told me to do and it worked! I LOST WEIGHT!!  I lost about thirty pounds on Weight Watchers going from a size 12 to a size 8. I think part of the reason Weight Watchers worked so well for me is because you have to pay to join and pay to weigh-in. I was not about to waste any money so that was an extra incentive to do right by the program.

Does the Weight Watchers Program work?  Yes, if followed the way it is outlined Weight Watchers can and will work for you, but losing the weight and keeping the weight off are two totally different things. So, while I was able to lose weight with Weight Watchers it was extremely hard to keep it off, because the constant point counting was too time consuming and I ended up eating more food than I was supposed to and eventually gained all of the weight back. 🙁 So with that being said, if you are very disciplined then you may very well be able to lose and keep the weight off with the Weight Watchers program. However, if you are like me and would rather spend your time enjoying food, living life, and not stressing over how many points something is worth then this may not be the program for you. Stay tuned for other perspectives on things I have tried on my weight loss journey.

Weight Loss Failures and Success: A Personal Perspective

We have a new diva of Health & Beauty here to help you with your weight loss goals, getting fit, skin care advice and making you the best ‘you’ you can be!! Her name is Ms. Tee!
We are a month and a half into this New Year and I wonder how many of us are keeping those New Year’s Resolutions to lose weight and live a healthier life. My weight has fluctuated since high school, so I know the struggle that the average person goes through in order to keep and maintain a healthy weight. Currently I am on my weight loss journey to lose the last fifteen pounds of a thirty-five pound weight goal I set for myself last year.
I have lost weight countless times and I have gained it all back too 🙁 I think I have finally happened upon a plan that is going to be long-lasting and I am so excited to share my story with you!  With that being said, I am going to begin my column here with Blondie’s Lipstick giving you all of my personal experiences as it relates to my weight loss journey. In the next few issues I will let you know what worked well for me and what did not. Hopefully, I can inspire you to become a healthier you because that is the most important thing.
I am going to be open and honest about everything that I have tried (and believe me I have tried A LOT of different methods to lose and keep the weight off) and I will also share with you my current regimen and let you know how that goes for me as well.

First things first….What did not work!
Starving your body by eating once a day does not work! The first time I decided I wanted to lose weight I
was in 15 years old in the 10th grade. I was not active in any extra-curricular activities. I could not afford a gym membership and my parents were not going to pay for a membership for me. I did not live in a neighborhood where I felt comfortable walking, so I was not getting any exercise. I decided the best thing for me to do would be to change the way I ate. Unfortunately, I had no clue about what I needed to do as far as my diet was concerned and I simply stopped eating. I would only eat one meal a day, usually after school. This worked for a little while and I was able to lose a little bit of weight, but before I graduated from high school I gained all the weight I loss and then some. Needless to say…starvation and eating only once a day is not healthy and it does NOT work!  The reason is because only eating once a day messes up your metabolism and makes it harder for you to burn calories during the day.
There are several other things that I have tried and I will be sharing those with you in the upcoming issues of Blondie’s Lipstick…stay tuned!

“Whoo! I Think I Put on a Few” (Part II)

Last issue we gave you tips on how to jump start your new diet in the new year. We’re not gonna stop there tho. Perhaps you’re like me and aren’t all that interested in getting up before work, driving to the gym and getting all sweaty. Well no worries! Why not try yoga or pilates at home to get to your ideal size?:

Basic Yoga Poses

What is yoga? While some people think of yoga simply as physical exercise, it is actually a complete, holistic system for overall health and well-being. Having been practiced for thousands of years, yoga includes everything from physical postures (asanas), personal hygiene, and a healthy diet to premeditation, breathing, and relaxation techniques. The most advanced forms of meditation and self-realization are also a part of yoga.

What is Pilates? Derived from ancient yoga asanas, the Pilates exercise system was developed by Joseph Pilates over 80 years ago. Practiced for decades by dancers, Pilates has become very popular in recent years. Although Pilates works the entire body, the primary focus is on the core muscles (abs, lower back, and stabilizing muscles). Pilates exercise machines (such as the “Reformer”) can add a weight training element to the workout, with very precise and fluid movements, making it safer than most weight training.
Guidelines for yoga and Pilates practice: Yoga postures, especially inversions and those that compress the abdomen, should not be done on a full stomach. Listen to your body—if you practice too soon after eating or drinking, certain poses will feel uncomfortable.

It’s best to practice yoga asanas barefoot, using a yoga mat or nonslip surface for standing poses. A mat, rug, or folded yoga blanket will provide firm padding for other asanas.

Wear comfortable clothing, something that allows you to move freely.

Ideally, the room should be well ventilated. Have enough space to extend your arms and legs in all directions without hitting anything.

While practicing, concentrate on the feeling that the asana is producing in your body.

If you feel too weak or shaky in a pose, come out of it. Gradually, you will build up your strength and be able to hold the pose longer.

Don’t go beyond your personal limitations, but extend your boundaries gently. Doing the asanas correctly means doing them to the best of your ability without straining.

Throughout the workout, focus on your breath, inhaling and exhaling fully and completely through your nose. Breathing with awareness not only feels good, but also balances and regulates energy flow within the body, strengthening your internal organs and boosting your resistance to disease.

“Whoo! I Think I Put on a Few”

Feeling a little round now that the holidays are over? Or perhaps your New Year’s Resolution was to loose a few? Regardless of your motive, here are a few tips to kick start that new workout routine from James Davis and Quentin Jude, instructors at the Wellness Center.

  • “If you enjoy your exercise it will actually destress you. It will release those hormones that will make you feel better, but then that goes along with if you don’t enjoy it you’re not going to do it. That’s why there’s so many different things out there now.”

  • “Have days set out that you’re going to stick to a plan and get a basic, simple diet. Stick with it that’s the main thing a lot of people have great ideas for new years resolutions and don’t stick to it.”

  • “Don’t just keep the same routine you’ve kept for all your life because your body gets used to it. You get used to it and then you don’t burn as many calories, it’s not a stressor for it. The actual stressor makes your body adjust to it and decide ok I’ve got to something a little bit different and you actually burn more calories that way.”

Davis and Jude also advise throwing away the leftovers to fully commit to your diet. Also throw out the sweets and start back drinking water, eating protein and taking some supplements (get back to Protein Promo – got my bikini body using these coupons), good carbs, fruits and vegetables.

Follow these tips & you’ll be on the fast track to slimming down in no time!

 >>Once a month our ‘Health Guru’ shares with us some tips on better living and now we’re passing them on to you!<<
So there has been a lot of hype in the news and T.V. on the health benefits of many different foods which are supposedly rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.  Well, one that surprised me a few years ago was the coconut.  I don’t know exactly what prompted my interest, but the information I found was enlightening to say the least!

Once seen as a menace to health, coconut oil in particular is now proclaimed by scientist and researchers as one of the most beneficial oils one can consume!  Just to list a few of the benefits derived from coconut oil:
Improves blood glucose levels
Protects against osteoporosis
Dissolves kidney stones
Improves digestion and bowel function
Reduces epileptic seizures
Prevents wrinkles, sagging skin and age spots
Wards off skin infection
Helps prevent liver disease
Kills viruses that cause influenza, herpes, measles, hepatitis C, SARS, AIDS, and other illnesses
There are different ways to benefit from this awesome fruit.  I know many people are not fond of the taste of coconut; I am actually one of those people!  Nonetheless, I find some coconut beverages to be absolutely delicious.  The one I drink the most, because you can find it at Walmart, is called Jelly Coconut Water by JCS Reggae.  You can drink it with or without pulp.  Other ways you can benefit is of course to cook with coconut oil vs. olive or vegetable oil.

As you can see, the coconut is more then just a fruit; it is a preventative medicine for many ailments!
If you would like more information on the coconut, you can read the information for yourself off the website http://www.coconutresearchcenter.org/.

Don’t Make Me Open a Jar of WHOOP ASH!!

by Wylie J. Stokeshart

That’s right! You read the title correctly….Whoop Ash! The comical moniker for this wonderful moisturizing cream is quite apropos because it does just what the title says…Whoop Ash. It is an M*U*S*T for anyone who is serious about having great skin and can be used year round.
The packaging is intriguing from the beginning. Its shiny black plastic jar has the hottest Pop Art meets comic strip-inspired label you’ve ever seen. However, the magic begins when the lid is removed and an amazing scent is released. It’s kind of like that fresh, yet opulent scent you get from expensive soap. They call it White Honey Mango & Shea Butter.  I call it Magnificent! From what would seem an unforgivingly-rigid exterior, a generous dollop is produced as you glide your middle and index finger across its pristine surface. No need to worry, its rich consistency insures that it sits firmly on its two finger perch. As you smooth the emollient moisturizer it just melts into your skin. The effect is immediate and your skin feels great. Like an animal in the desert who finally reaches an oasis, your skin drinks and is refreshed. Arms, legs, feet, hands and the rest of your body comes to life. Needless to say, this product really whoops ash. Even though it can be used year round, Whoop Ash works well during the fall and winter months when ashen skin runs rampant.
The company that produces Whoop Ash is Sheree Elizabeth, LLC and is led by the beautiful Sheree Fletcher. Formerly married to superstar Will Smith, and mother of his eldest son Trey, she is now married to former NFL running back Terrell Fletcher. She was motivated to learn more about and develop natural beauty products by reading the book “The Secret Life of Bees”.
